Yes the black cap comes off but a smooth knife edge or cell phone 'spud' tool might be needed to pry it a little. Keep it coming straight off by not prying too much on one side, then it just pulls off.

Batteries are held up in the black cap. I had to pull everything out since it got flooded and the rest of the guts came out by rappin it with the opening down onto a counter. There is a pad to make contact with the battery and a tiny round piezo buzzer and then the end of a very thin single sided circuit board slides out. Once I got a bit of that out I was able to grab it carefully with pliers and pull the rest out to clean and dry it. Mine had two LR44 batteries. I've had bad experience with cheap pill batteries (short battery life) through eBay, so you might do better to get name brand LR44's for a much longer battery life. How long do good name brand batteries last in this thing?

Cons: none I recently found myself at home having to do some basic electrical work installing a light kit on a ceiling fan. While attempting this little home project of mine, I obviously needed a way test for live wires, so I decided that I would borrow the Gardner Bender GVD-504A Voltage Tester from the place I work.
The Gardner Bender GVD-504A is a handy little tool for checking the presence of electrical current for pretty much anything. It is about the size of a large magic marker, and kind of looks like one too.
The Gvd-504A Circuit Alert is a voltage tester that allows you to detect the presence of electricity in a range of anywhere from 50 to 600 volts. It runs on two watch type batteries that are included with your purchase. You should be able pick this up for about $10 at any hardware type of store.
I described this voltage tester as kind of looking like a magic marker, because of it shape, and a narrow tipped design that allows you to place the tip inside of an electrical outlet to test the presence of electrical energy. The GVD-504A also has a pen clip on it that allows you to easily secure it in your pocket.

The pen clip also serves as a way for you to test the batteries on this voltage tester by simply pushing down on it. If the batteries are good and you push down on the pen clip, the GV-504A will emit a single beep, as well as light up the red LED light that is built into this tester.

When using this you should always test it out first make sure that the batteries are good, because if the batteries are dead, it will not let you know that the wire you are about to touch has electricity running through it or not. Using the GVD-504A voltage tester is very easy to do. To use it, all you have to do is press down on the pen clip and place the tip of it inside any electrical outlet, light socket, or wire that you wish to test for electrical current. If the voltage tester finds the presence of electricity, it alerts you by giving off a chirping sound as well as lighting up a red LED light that is near the tip of the tester.
It really is as simple as that. I like the fact that when I was checking some wires, I didn't have to put it on the very end of a stripped wire to detect electricity. By just placing the tip of the tester on or near the coating of the wire it was able to detect electricity. I have also found that when testing electrical outlets, I didn't even have to place the tip inside the outlet at all. By just getting the tip close to the outlet while depressing the pen clip, the Gardner Bender GVD-504A alerted me to the presence of electricity. As long as you are using this in a safe manner and not touching any exposed wires with your hands, this is very safe to use as it is made almost entirely of plastic so there is no real need to worry about getting electrocuted. I have noticed when using this, that when trying to test a single wire that is located very near other 'hot' wires, that you must try to separate the wires so that you don't get a false reading off of a wire that you are not testing.
Overall I have found this product be very helpful in all types of situations. Just remember that any time you are dealing with electricity, Be Very Careful, and if you are in doubt, call a professional. Thanks for reading my review, I hope you found it helpful.
